Orange Is the New Black Season 1 Review

Orange Is the New Black (TV Series 2013–2019) Poster

One of Netflix'south first swell shows

Warning: Spoilers

Orangish is the New Black was 1 of the beginning Netflix original shows. Luckily, it was actually great with slap-up storylines. When the evidence offset came out, it was groundbreaking. It had a very diverse cast, all of which had neat grapheme arcs. Even the guards had proficient stories. I loved the flashbacks, which gave context to different stories. The first 6 seasons were just amazing. Season seven I call up leaned a lilliputian too heavy on the social issues which detracted from the overall story. I also really disliked Piper and Alex in the final few seasons. Overall nifty show and one of Netflix'south first great shows.

Non as funny as it used to be

Warning: Spoilers

Season 7 is going a tad bit overboard trying to hit all the political hot push button bug. I'grand all for trying to get the message out merely every storyline deals with an unfortunate issue and information technology's kinda depressing. > You lot've got female genital mutilation, unlawful deportation, poor treatment by ice agents to immigrants being held, the "me as well" movement both the crusade and the effect and the validity on both sides of the story. The illegal immigrant mother getting her children taken abroad, etc. > I still like the prove merely it has completely changed it doesn't seem like a work of fiction anymore. Its heavy and feels more like a platform for political awareness.

Peachy...for five seasons. Watching Flavor vi was a job and Season seven was an ordeal.

(Updated after Flavour 7)

The story of your boilerplate early on-30s female person yuppie who gets sent to prison for xv months for a crime she committed 10 years earlier. Flavor 1 Episode one shows her checking into the prison, and the residue is what goes on inside, plus the effects of her incarceration on her friends and family unit.

Initially I idea it was going to a female version of Oz, only it is far better than that. Multi-dimensional: funny, sensitive and sometimes night. In that location is heaps of depth to the characters. Clever apply of pre-prison flashbacks to show what motivates characters in sure situations, and how they got to be in jail. Very sensitively done, it often shows how their personalities were shaped.

This besides serves to show that you can't simply judge people past their current actions - everyone has heaps of baggage.

Superb performances from a spot-on cast.

Then different to what I expected, and very pleasantly and so.

Flavor four continues the skilful work and was the usual mix of powerful drama and biting comedy. Maybe a chip darker and deeper than previous seasons due to roofing problems of insanity, depression, guard brutality and prisoners' lives once they get out of prison house. Some characters who didn't go much focus in previous seasons get more of the limelight, while others go less. 1 of the casualties is Pennsatucky / Doggett (Taryn Manning), which is a shame as she is one of my favourites - multi-layered and funny. On the plus side, Lolly (Lori Petty) gets much more than screen time and she is cracking: funny and sad, all at the same time.

The last 2 episodes of Season 4 are incredibly powerful and moving.

Season 5 picks up where S4 left off and shows that the writers had certainly not run out of ideas. At a signal when virtually serial start to feel jaded, Orange is the New Black was as stiff and fresh as ever.

Even so, Season v does mark a turning betoken, as the show moves from being predominantly character-based to more plot-based. This is a negative affair, as information technology was the characters and their stories that make the show so engaging.

Season 6 is where the novelty starts to wear off and the writing starts to show signs of weakness. The setting and situation were new: the Max side of the prison, consummate with the more limited freedom information technology presents, plus grittier, more than dangerous characters. This made for some interesting possibilities and the writers used these fairly well.

Notwithstanding, the character appointment, normally OITNB's strongest feature, is now largely missing. Tasha Jefferson is the but grapheme whose story is worth following, and this gets drawn out to the nth degree. Piper Chapman, existence irritating (though I think this was more due to Taylor Schilling's functioning than anything else), was never worth supporting and this flavour is no exception. She does, however, provide the nearly emotional moment of the flavour.

The lack of date in the season is largely due to some previously-likeable/interesting characters being made into irritating characters. The over-the-topness of Ruby and Lorna'south dialogue and general drama constantly fabricated me melody out whenever they appeared.

There are a host of new characters but none are worth supporting. Their introduction besides dilutes the impact of the characters and stories you do care about.

Overall Flavour 6 was watchable but information technology did experience similar a task at times.

The downwards trajectory continues in the final season, Season 7. Past now it is all plot-based and the engagement levels are close to zero. The plots themselves feel like retreads of old ones: there'southward very piddling new under the sun. The transformation of previously-likeable characters into irritating characters continues. Lorna is especially annoying.

At that place was quite a bit of potential though: several of the ex-inmates are at present on the outside, and so y'all get to meet how the US deals with ex-cons. This was reasonably interesting, as you meet how badly ex-cons are treated past the arrangement and how the odds are stacked in favour of them going dorsum to jail. Unfortunately, the cardinal character in this is Piper, and she'due south irritating, as e'er.

The other area that had potential was the sub-plot involving deportees and ICE, as this shows how the US treats illegal immigrants (curt answer: not very well). Unfortunately, the writers ruin this by massively overegging the pudding: farthermost cases, out-of-the-blue discourse speeches and political finger-pointing. Rather than accost the issues with sensitivity and subtlety, they're rammed down your throat. And so preachy.

Season 7 was quite an ordeal to get through. I only put myself through it to see the serial through to the end. Even then the writers don't make information technology easy: xiii episodes with a 1.5-hour final episode! In total that's well-nigh 14 hours of my life wasted.

Season ratings: Seasons 1-4: 10/10 Flavor 5: nine/x Season vi: v/10 Season 7: 3/10

From groundbreaking to a complete mess

Season 5 is the perfect instance of when the show needs to be over. Start 2 seasons were amazing, then we saw a gradual decline in skilful storytelling. And flavour 5 has no mutual thread, all the erstwhile characters are not even given a chance to shine. The show seems very disconnected, too many ideas never class into annihilation interesting. Please let information technology be the last season because it'south borderline embarrassing. Pass the word to American Horror Story, and the new Twin Peaks.

Starts out great, ends upwardly awful.

Outset couple season were actually amazing, but like a lot of shows, this one overstays its welcome and ends up condign incoherent garbage. Tin can't say I recommend it.

Pretty Good!

Orange is the New Black is every bit as good as everyone says and is definitely worth watching. I was entertained throughout the entire serial. Having said that, I think Wentworth is the amend show nearly a women'southward prison. If you haven't seen this yet do yourself a favor and go check it out!

This has rave reviews and I'm actually not sure why.

Warning: Spoilers

is it considering of the occasional lesbian sex shown in a very coy way ? or is it the odd flashing of a stray breast ?

This is not Oz in a woman's prison. This is a watered down prison house soap for people that desire to pat themselves on the back for watching something where the word cwnt is mentioned occasionally and could been seen as 'close to the border'.

The characterisation and acting is actually adequately good and the pb character is likable.

The problem is the saturated fat instead of substance. The fact that you have to disengage brain likewise often to watch it. The proposition that almost all prison inmates are mentally challenged but simply 1 is mentally sick and where the racial stereotypes are laughable.

The blackness population are a cantankerous between whores and comic children's toys where the black doll has floppy hair and does high fives repeatedly. Their voice communication and patois is a racial parody for American white eye class to look downward on. There isn't 1 black person with a encephalon or a motivation autonomously from deep fried chicken and an impulse to trip the light fantastic toe at the driblet of a hat.

A good case beingness the storyline of the mobile phone subconscious in a wall. It'south being used for entertaining an inmates swain by her sending him 'shocking' pictures of her punani. Just ane minor problem... how does she accuse it ?

so information technology's non Oz, it's non close to Oz more's the compassion.

Show went downwardly in flames afterwards season 3

Another show that was dragged out for besides long. Actually the showtime two flavour were interesting and fun, and so it steamrolled itself to a terrible ending. By the time it ended, the only character I nevertheless cared about was Tasty, who got totally screwed past her friend, who should take told the truth. Piper and Alex, those whiny punks, could take both gotten killed (every bit characters) and I wouldn't have cared. Just another bear witness that didn't know when to quit.

To Start Out With Anyway, Very Overrated

Warning: Spoilers

I am chiming in nigh this show because I am surprised at how positive the reviews are trending for information technology. After reading positive buzz over the past several months, I have finally had the opportunity to watch Orangish is the New Black. And I am very, very unimpressed.

Now, equally a disclaimer, I've just watched the offset couple of episodes. So I cannot comment on the rest of the beginning season. Merely from what I did see, my observations are as follows:

The Proficient - The premise is undeniably compelling, even if it is for salacious reasons. The title is cool and clever. Laura Prepon. A different role for Kate "Helm Janeway" Mulgrew. It's cool to support Netflix'south pioneering spirit.

The Bad - The writing. The pb character and her fiancé. (Those are 2 HUGE negatives, though.)

I was expecting an intelligent drama. Maybe my expectations were off, or unreasonable. Is this bear witness a black comedy? Information technology seems like information technology at times, but the "humor" is very lowest-common denominator, oft employing very cheap-feeling shock value. Others have suggested that this show gets abroad from clichés...I don't know, perhaps in some isolated cases, but on the whole it strikes me as extremely clichéd.

The lead graphic symbol is utterly unconvincing, annoying, and uninteresting to me. In the bad sort of way, the not-worth-watching some other episode sort of way. Maybe I am being too hasty in my judgment? Overall, I can see why this testify draws viewers. It is compulsively watchable in a sure way. But non the way that deserves loftier quality ratings, in my opinion.

I approached Orange is the New Black with an open mind, by the fashion. I only feel that information technology is not very good. Certainly non to be compared with the all-time shows around. Are we watching the same show hither? I applaud Netflix for the effort, only would suggest that there is huge room for improvement, based on what I have seen.

A Complete Waste matter of Fourth dimension

dk777 25 February 2021

Another evidence that started out fun and interesting but to be ruined by bad writing in the end.

A show that had potential, fun and interesting characters, so it's a real shame it didn't have better writers.

The cast is skillful and the concept is interesting, but it's just not enough and very quickly the show becomes boring and tiresome. With such an interesting plot it could have been actually peachy.

An interesting concept, the show could have been bang-up, only the writers destroyed information technology.

I'm really sorry for the time I lost watching this series, it became and so bad and tedious that I couldn't watch it to the terminate. The actors are smashing, but they are not enough to save this ending.

A complete waste material of time.

This Impressive Drama Features An Extraordinary Cast

Warning: Spoilers

Orange is the New Blackness is being released on Netflix. I am providing my review after watching the first four episodes.

Considering nigh of the prove takes place inside a women's prison, this show features an huge female person bandage, and it's a wonderful bandage. Taylor Schilling plays the pb, Piper Chapman, who has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for her function in drug smuggling x years before. Taylor as well played the iconic role of Dagny Taggart in Atlas Shrugged. Laura Prepon (That Seventies Evidence) plays Alex, Piper's ex-girlfriend. Kate Mullgrew plays Red, a Russian émigré who runs the prison kitchen. Natasha Lyonne plays Nicky a savvy girl who gets some of the best lines. Yael Stone, who plays Lorna, is a striking presence on screen. There are then many strong actresses in this product that I can't listing them all.

Jason Biggs plays Piper's fiancé who must wait for her release to restart their life together.

Orange is the New Blackness is a drama with stiff comedic undertones. The New York prison where the women are incarcerated has an atmosphere that might best exist described as sterile, scary and decadent. As the women deal with the inhumanities of prison life, some seek small daily pleasures, a few concord onto their hopes for a meliorate life after prison, and some are hopeless victims of the institution. Nigh of the latter were victims in the outside earth every bit well.

As the women are introduced to the states, at that place are flashbacks detailing their histories and the circumstances that sent them to prison. Their stories are humanizing. The prison employees as well live within the prison culture where rules are paramount. They too are imprisoned during their work hours and must learn to cope with an insensitive environment that is also political.

Piper has to larn the rules and the other harsh realities from the first moment she enters Litchfield Prison. Then she has to acquire how to cope, making mistakes along the fashion. Before she was confined, she lived a life at the peak of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs; in prison house, the nearly bones needs cannot exist taken for granted. Even the hugs are rationed during visits with family and friends.

As you sentinel, I call back you lot volition discover that your heart hurts for these women. There are so many themes available to the writers, but central is the fleeting nature of hope.

Tin can love flourish in prison house? I call up we will observe out.

I rate this show 9/10.

Kickoff season was slap-up, it keeps getting worse at present

The first season of this show was actually proficient! The 2d season was okay, the third season was just watchable. Season 4 I had to force myself through the pain of watching until the cease and after that I completely gave up, no interest left to watch the new seasons. This could have been a adept two to three season bear witness, at present they're just trying to elevate it out for profits but I'd exist surprised if this prove has even half the following it did back when it started. My advice is sentry the first season and stop there. Trust me, information technology doesn't get any better.

Shock factors should never exist deliberate

Warning: Spoilers

The ane star is for some of the characters in this, information technology is no doubt full of talented actors and actresses but I observe a lot of the sex, nudity in this series is put in at that place deliberately for stupor cistron and it overtakes from any substantial story line. Unlike Breaking Bad, this is not a night one-act that is constructive in combining profound serious bug with humour. It fails at this remarkably in my opinion. I take watched other incredible films that revolve or have a central focal signal around homosexuality - like Brokeback Mountain and Monster - these films do not come up across as trying too difficult to be eclectic because at that place's a holistic component to the entire story and its depth. They simply merely tell the story and the story stands for itself. I guess what I hateful is that it is pretty obvious to a viewer when nudity and sex scenes (be they aforementioned sex or not) are trying too hard to be shocking or eclectic to increase viewer transport and information technology gets in the manner of the story. It's but trying to be too funny, also dissimilar and too deliberate with trying to appeal to men's girl on daughter fantasies that the story loses substance.

Excellente !!

Whoah!

What a rollercoaster 7 seasons have been! Never have I been then invested in characters on boob tube!

Yeah it started out equally a i-adult female show but I think the creators rightly enlarged the scope of OITNB. Soooo many characters yet you knew them all in such detail. Surely even bigger than a soap opera?

Cried a few times likewise., not really.

Season 3 is really tedious

This series has lost its way. It's fashion besides focused on the human relationship between Alex and Piper (a real snooze fest) and not focused enough on what makes these characters interesting. There is no spark hither anymore. What made seasons 1 and 2 interesting only isn't in that location anymore. This story is played out. Fourth dimension for it to become! And Pennsatucky! Actually? Do new teeth completely transform a person? I remember not. By far the most interesting character on the testify, Red, has been reduced to a total stereotype - of the aging tough woman with a heart of gilded. She was so interesting before and now she is just as tedious as all of the other characters. Most ho-hum of all is Alex. She was edgy in seasons 1 and ii and at present she is but annoying - non interesting at all. Did they change writers or producers or did they just accept one skilful idea and they are stringing it out every bit long as possible? I will say that Crazy Eyes continues to be the most fun character to watch - played to perfection!

It'southward similar the start few seasons of Weeds

It brings back memories of Weeds. You know in its glory days. The first few seasons before it went off the rail. That's what "Orange Is the New Black" is like. Equal parts funny and sad. A mix of true pathos and yet true honesty and beauty coming from the strangest places. Be warned nonetheless at that place is plenty of lesbian sex activity and if the "F" word makes your ears bleed it is probably a good thought to turn back now...This isn't OZ but this also isn't Disney. This is a true winner from Netflix and tells an interesting story not merely from the main grapheme'south perspective but from the other inmates as well. It would have been boring to see things from just her indicate of view. Like Nancy Botwin on Weeds, sometime Piper Chapman is portrayed in not so good a calorie-free because she tin be the villain in someone else's story.

Fantastic for most of the manner

I enjoy so many of the characters and everything they go through! I'm just now seeing the concluding season and and so far pretty practiced although I think the start 5 seasons were the best. Lots of wild personalities, intense episodes, satisfying wins, and great soundtrack! OITNB is a phenomenal perspective of what it's like for women prisoners in many aspects. Lastly I dearest the excitement I experience from the beginning credits, nice mix of jolly and dark.

No more daily soap

Well the concept of women prison is something new and I started watching information technology with blank mind. Start is all in all mildly interesting only as the story progresses there is not much to expect. The leading character, Taylor faces multiple dilemmas, most interesting of which is about her sexual orientation. She used to exist gay in by but she has a boyfriend now..then she bumps into her old girlfriend in prison.so that is the most exciting part. Merely wait there is mild one-act too..she comes across a stalker whose weird acting is to exist appreciated the well-nigh. The entire season is full of modest fourth dimension accidents and fuss that Taylor comes across. Orange is the new black is not a thriller every bit a prison based series should be only its close to chick pic. It covers every theme partly so, it is no more than a regular time pass daily lather.

Alarm: Spoilers

What started out as a number one has been downsized to a number five season iv.. Have non seen the whole season as nevertheless, but the starting time four episodes are non nearly as good as by seasons, hence the rating to number 5 I major plot hole (spoiler alert) is : Doesn't anyone miss the guard who was murdered??? Thus far, NOTHING. Doesn't anyone on the staff or his private life wonder what happened to him? What about his paycheck. What does anyone think when he but 'vanishes' and doesn't even pick upward his check!!!! Unless this is addressed afterwards in the season, I volition give this an fifty-fifty lower rating as the flavor progresses... Some of the backstories are not very interesting and just take upward room as what's going on inside the prison. Wish the writers, producers or even some bandage members would selection upward on this and especially WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT Hitting-Homo Baby-sit!!!!!! Nuff' said except some of the acting is very good to poor....will not proper name names!!!

Quickly Degrading

Warning: Spoilers

Season 1 was a refreshing experience. An innocent educated woman sentenced to jail makes up for a not bad story to tell. The plot is centered around Piper's troubles and tribulations in dealing with her new life as an inmate, it made me curious enough to watch the whole season, and I liked it. Season i turned out to be very successful, the dramatic/comic entertainment value was undeniable.

Season 2.

Eager to cash in in their success, the producers must accept felt the demand to extend the life of the series. Their approach is to develop circumstantial characters every bit part of the main plot. Risky business organisation!

Then, nosotros are no longer following Piper, but a agglomeration of other uninteresting characters that completely modify the entertaining tempo of season one. The intent is to slow downward the evidence in social club to greenbacks in their success. The trouble is that they have transformed an interesting story into an inmates lather opera. They endeavor to provide continuity past maintaining a similar comical arroyo to crude situations, and by the already established sexual tensions, mainly on the lesbian side.

I watched season i in 2 days, simply I can't watch back to dorsum flavor 2 episodes, I have lost a lot of interest every bit I feel manipulated past a degrading plot that no longer appeals to me at any level. I am half way into season 2, and I doubt that I will terminate it.

Hilarious and dark.

This show is a seriously funny drama.

If you similar 'Weeds', 'Breaking Bad' or adopt your sense of humour on the darker side, then give it a become... y'all will not be disappointed.

Very few people create characters similar Jenji Kohan... and information technology is the characters that brand this show. Like 'Weeds', 'Orangish' is fresh and original, and like 'Weeds' the pb character is tragically flawed and hilariously funny.

Well done to Netflix on their latest product... 'Hemlock Grove' is just weird, 'House of Cards' was hit and miss... but information technology looks like the third fourth dimension is a charm. Bravo.

(FYI: sense of humor is how nosotros Brits spell humor). :-)

Also many stereotypes

Warning: Spoilers

This could have been a really good show if the writers had actually taken the time to do some research on blacks and latinos, instead of relying on stereotypes that are found on the net. I realize that when it comes to the white inmates on the show there's a good variety of characters. You have the meth addicts, and the hillbilly and the trailer trash, and the naïve blond haired blue eyed princess, oh and there'due south fifty-fifty a nun. OK that'south great, there's plenty of diversity there.

Unfortunately the black bandage is comprised of nix but loud, ghetto, uneducated and obese women. The just two who seem normal are a transsexual and an emotional disturbed inmate dubbed crazy optics, because in the optics of the creators of the show a black adult female must be a freak in order for her to possess some intelligence. The latina characters didn't turn out any better. Their characters were all written to exist women with multiple children past multiple men, oh yeah and big surprise there is a mother and daughter in prison house together. So freaking stereotypical that information technology's embarrassing. This show could have been so much improve

All that hype? For this?!?!

Orange is the New Black is not the worst show you could e'er subject yourself to, nonetheless, it is far from the masterpiece the critics are making information technology out to be. Orange is the New Black follows Piper every bit she navigates life from behind bars. The premise is really absurd and Jenji Kohan is a nifty author, so I figured why not? Well, heres why non: the story is unnecessarily convoluted. One episode jumps from one perspective to the next without every really developing a clear cut thought for what they're trying to show us. The offset season, however, was more focused on Piper's struggle backside confined and gave a flake abroad about those around her. That would be fine for one, MAYBE two episodes just a WHOLE Series?? Season 2 was very sub-par to the first. Inside the first three episodes, Piper is seen a handful of times and we start to shift our focus to other characters such as Lori Footling. Don't misunderstand me, this is not horrible television. In fact, it is very entertaining but it, in no style, shape or class is primary class writing or characters. Quite honestly, if Netflix did not produce this bear witness, I couldn't see information technology doing well on any network as with most Netflix originals that are non Business firm of Cards. This is merely a stretched out mini-series that hasn't gotten thinned out all the same. Now, I know there are a ton of fans out there that love this bear witness and that is swell but I'm just not ane of them. Like Jenji Kohen's other show Weeds, after season 3, this will jump the proverbial shark.

The Memoir of Piper Kerman

Warning: Spoilers

Having watched thirteen episodes of Season 1, I found this to be a wonderful story about one woman'south feel serving a 15 month sentence in a minimum security women's prison. Based on the memoir of executive consultant, Piper Kerman, this is a story about Piper, a immature woman raised in a white, upper middle class family, who completed her education at college, and while looking for a job as a waitress at a local bar, meets and begins a relationship with Alex, played by the statuesque and pretty Laura Prepon. The two young women alive an audacious and romantic life for several years globe trotting and drug trafficking for an international drug cartel until they eventually part ways. Then, after 10 years, Piper is arrested, tried, and constitute guilty of being an accomplice to drug trafficking and coin laundering, right when she's settling downwardly with her boyfriend, Larry, played by Jason Biggs. So, Larry drives his beloved Piper to prison where Piper surrenders herself to begin her xv month judgement, with the intention of serving her time, and then marrying her fiancé, Larry. But, Piper is a fish out of water in an environment that seeks to teach the hard lesson of conformity. The cast is amazing, and the storyline well written, with good character development through flashbacks. The guards and prison administration are portrayed as decadent and exploitative in a conceivable way. The prisoners are multi-dimensional, at times sympathetic, with loyalties that modify depending on what is at gamble at that moment in fourth dimension as tribal principles prevail. This story is about accommodation and survival every bit much as information technology is about finding love in all the wrong places. And this really happened to someone. I would highly recommend this enjoyable series, and expect forward to Season 2.
